What is a doula?
The word “doula” is used to refer to a trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and just after birth; or who provides emotional and practical support during the postpartum period. Research shows that the services of a doula can improve parental satisfaction in the birth experience and ease the transition that comes with the addition of a baby to a family.

Fees can vary among doulas in the same area depending on the range of services offered and the doula’s experience. Doulas practicing in the greater Athens area typically charge from $500 to $800.
Many doulas accept special payment arrangements, including bartering for services! Feel free to ask a prospective doula what kinds of terms she would consider. Most doulas are happy to try and find a mutual working agreement.
